"Kudos to those behind pumping life back into Unity Hall. The importance of their success is a vital cog for our future. And the involvement and support of our community for Unity Hall will lead to better people and better things for Beckley." -11/2/2011-Register-Herald.
On average 6,000 students drop out of West Virginia schools each year, and 80% of those dropouts are expected to eventually end up in prison. In 2009 16% of children under the age of 18 in Raleigh County dropped out of school. The lifetime cost to the nation for each youth who drops out of school and later moves into a life of crime and drugs ranges from $1.7 to $2.3 million dollars.
Unity Hall Community Center seeks to combat this problem by utilizing technology and digital media arts as a vehicle to promote learning and social change. Programs are targeted, but not limited to youth ages 15 – 21, and utilize a multitude of approaches that take an “assets,” rather than a “deficit” approach to enabling teens and young adults to be actively involved in their own development.
